Unlock Phone Using Leaves Ear, Maybe If You Use Bodyprint!
High-tech smartphones like the iPhone and the Galaxy S6 for example, is already supporting extra security by providing a fingerprint sensor that is used for authorization and payment. Only impact yes, especially if the price is not so inflated with this super security technology. As a result, still people with money just can exploit this advantage, while devices that are cheaper can not.
A team of researchers from Yahoo Labs recently have found a solution. They developed a technology called Bodyprint, namely authentication system using a touchscreen mobile phone as his scanner. But, different is, this is not intended to fingerprint alias fingerprints, but to ears (ears).
This Bodyprint use capacitive sensors on the touchscreen and does not require additional hardware other special or other sensors. Hence this technology allows really to be used on any smartphone which has a capacitive screen, which is already owned by most smartphones today.
Then, why ear, and not a fingerprint? Because, the screen's resolution is not high enough to be able to capture the details very clearly of fingerprints. Therefore, it is used specifically for the identification of the ear leaf shape that is unique and different for every individual. It could also identify the grip of the phone, the position of the fingers, palms, and also the position of the phalanges (knuckle of the middle).
The following demonstration Bodyprint tested on Nexus 5:
Then what about accuracy? Of the 864 trials, Bodyprint has an accuracy rate of 99.5% with 7.8% rejection to the ear, and 26.8% for other body parts.
Bodyprint is still in the process of development, and not yet ready also to be applied directly to your smartphone. But how was this very potential to be developed further into the future, and break the assumption if biometric scanning can only be used in devices that expensive.
